The song was first recorded by Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters in 1963. ‘Cry Baby’ has been performed by a many artists since including British singer-songwriter Joss Sone, American singer Alison Iraheta and Hungarian singer Magdolna Rúzsa. Performances of the song have notably featured in blind auditions on The Voice reality TV franchise.
